Call CAHPCU When You Need Financing!
Sometimes special financing rates for specific models may be advertised, but usually certain restrictions apply to qualify. Make sure you do the math; some low interest loans with dealer-incentives may end up costing you less than no-interest loans without those incentives. Before you sign a contract to purchase or finance the motorcycle, consider the terms of the financing and evaluate whether it’s affordable. Before you drive off the lot, be sure to have a copy of the contract both you and the dealer have signed and be sure that all the blanks are filled.

Remember to ask us about MBI or GAP insurance when you are looking at purchasing a new vehicle. Always consider the cost vs. value for you, but we believe CAHPCU offers excellent protection with our MBI and GAP products. To learn more, click here.

Buying Tips
Since our membership consists of some of the best bikers around, here are a few hints we’ve picked up.

  • The first thing you need to decide is what type of bike you want.
  • Think about the riding you plan to do. You can learn more about potential bikes at manufacturer web sites: BMW, Harley Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, or others.
  • Check in with friends and relatives to see if they have preferences and why – either on a brand or even a local dealership.
  • Don't overlook the benefits of buying a used motorcycle. Like used cars, used motorcycles can be a real bargain.
  • Take the bike out for a test drive. You'll want to check that the seat is comfortable and make sure your feet can reach the ground. A good bike should make it easy for you to stop, speed up, and slow down. Pay extra attention to how the bike handles around corners.
  •  If you're looking at a used motorcycle, inspect it closely and ask for maintenance records if it’s a private party deal.
  •  And if you don't already have a motorcycle license, you're going to need one to ride legally. Check out the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (800-446-9227; www.msf-usa.org ) to get more information.

Experience Counts
If you plan on riding the bike primarily as daily transportation,
consider a standard, or traditional, bike.

If you commute long distances or occasionally ride with a passenger,
you may want to check out a cruiser.

But if you intend to log many hours with a passenger behind you,
then consider a touring bike.
For a little more performance in a
touring bike, there's a subset called sport/touring.

If you really want to straighten curvy roads, test-drive a sport bike.

Other tips out there? Let us know and we will try and incorporate them into the CAHPCU web site!

Buying Used
Whether you buy a used motorcycle from a dealer or an individual, compare the odometer reading with the condition of the bike. Does it look right? Ask to see the maintenance and service records and receipts.

  • Look for rust and scratches on the bodywork, tank and fenders. Inspect the foot pegs for wear: Worn on top means lots of miles, worn on the bottom indicates leaning over too far in corners.
  • A cracked or weather-beaten seat and faded, oxidized paint means the bike has seen a hard life.
  •  Check for new or aftermarket parts that have obviously replaced broken ones. Specifically, check the foot pegs, mirrors, handlebar grips, and brake and clutch levers.
  • Inspect the engine and transmission cases for oil seepage, weeping, and leaks.
  • The chain should be clean and tight, with about an inch of slack measured halfway between the sprockets on the bottom run. A rusty or grime-caked chain indicates lack of maintenance.
  • Brake discs should be smooth, clean and not blue--a sign of dragging/overheating brakes.
  • Examine the tires for signs of abuse.
  • The bike should start easily and may initially emit a little smoke on a cold startup. If it's hard to start or billows clouds of smoke--especially blue smoke--beware.

Check out the National Auto Dealers Association (NADA) price guide to learn more about the average cost of motorcycles in a specific make, model, or condition. Just remember that the price guide is published on a monthly basis, so figures can change quite frequently.
