History of The C.A.H.P. Credit Union

The Credit Union began on February 14, 1969, when five founding members (later to become directors) petitioned and were approved by the California Department of Financial Institutions (then, the Department of Corporations) to form C.A.H.P. Credit Union.

The C.A.H.P. Credit Union’s initial field of membership was expressly reserved for employees and members of the California Association of Highway Patrolmen (the Association). This field of membership served as the vehicle for the creation and design of our distinctive logo. The Credit Union’s bylaws were presented and adopted on February 17, 1969.

For years, our headquarters (North Office) were located at 1408 5th Street in Sacramento, which we shared with the Association. In time, the office moved to 8th and L Street, which was also shared with the Association. During our first seven years, the Sacramento office served the entire membership across the state. In October 1977, the Credit Union purchased the land at 2843 Manlove Road in Sacramento and developed it to be the Corporate Headquarters. In 1995, a remodel to the building was completed and 3500 square feet was added. This remains the corporate headquarters.

In 1976, the Credit Union leased office space for its first branch office in Southern California (South Office) to serve the southern membership base. In the spring of 1982, spurred by demand and growth, the branch office was moved from West Covina to San Dimas. That space was quickly outgrown and the branch office was relocated again in the summer of 1987. In the spring of 1997, the need for additional space in Southern California spurred the remodel and another move to a new office in San Dimas. During the past few years, the C.A.H.P. Credit Union saw an opportunity to better serve our officers with a more convenient location while also creating a state of the art branch office. We were excited to celebrate the grand opening of our newest branch on August 29, 2012 (click here to view the grand opening celebration video). Our Southern California branch is now located at 9471 Pittsburgh Avenue, Rancho Cucamonga.

Over time, the membership field expanded to include the employees (dispatchers, secretaries, janitors, etc,) of the Highway Patrol and their families. Later, the West Sacramento Police Officers and the Sacramento Firefighters Local 522 and their employees and family members were added. In 1990, the Credit Union volunteers and management decided it was time for the Credit Union to grow. In order to do that, the field of membership needed to expand to allow additional select employee groups (SEGs) to join.

Still keeping with the idea of serving public safety families around the state, in 1991 the field of membership was expanded to include the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), which serves many Police and Sheriff’s associations throughout the State. PORAC currently serves over 58,000 members who, by virtue of their membership in PORAC, are eligible for membership at C.A.H.P. Credit Union. The Credit Union now also serves a number of organizations associated with public safety around the state.

Restrict Information Sharing With Other Companies We Do Business With To Provide Financial Products and Services: Unless you say “No,” we may share personal and financial information about you with outside companies we contract with to provide financial products and services to you.

Member Update: Before our staff respond to questions regarding your specific accounts or activity, we are obligated to find workable ways to ensure the person we are dealing with is who he or she says, specifically is the person who purports to be a member really that member.

Our staff will ask the caller questions that only the actual member should be able to answer correctly. This security measure is gaining popularity and commonly referred to as “out of wallet” questions. Effectively weeding out pretext callers and blocking account takeovers requires this more creative approach. We will ask callers something only the true member is likely to know – not a piece of data that can be gained from a stolen wallet or a little research on the Internet.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but in today’s environment we must do all we can to keep our members’ financial information secure. To learn more on how to protect yourself from identity theft or other criminal fraud, please visit Resources and review the growing library of Fraud & Security related information.
